Oil and filters are a lot cheaoer than buying hard parts. We are currently in a drought situation running irrigation engines around the clock. For instance, when I run a Bottom Line Cost Analysis for my customers, if I can extend their change interval from 250 hours to 350 hours it is a break-even when you take into account filter costs, labor, fuel economy, etc. If you put the pencil to it at the end of the year, the most expensive oil may very well be the cheapest. I meet with clients everyday who have tried to save money in the short term by using cheaper oils, but has cost them dearly in the long run with increased equipment failures and downtime. As a rule in agriculture and construction, your lubrication budget will be approximately 1% of your overall operating expenses. I would prefer you to safely extend your current oil drain interval by using oil analysis to generate additional savings. I understand with today's agricultural economic uncertainty you are trying to cut costs wherever you can, but engine and hydraulic oil is the lifeblood of your equipment. With all due respect, I would stay with a major brand lubrication product such as Shell, Mobil, Chevron, etc, or look into some of the synthetic specialty companies such as Conklin, Amsoil,Cenpeco, and of course my favorite Schaeffer!. We use Amsoil synthetic, change filter at 300hrs, go another 300 and change oil and filter. Good or bad experience needed! Would be used in all of our big machinery. Normally use Rotello 15W-40 but have been looking at Traveller All Fleet Diesel Engine Oil 15W-40. With the high price for diesel engine oil these days I have been looking for other brands that may do as well but perhaps less costly or go on sale.
